cumuliform cloud

A convective cloud with vertical development, formed by rising air currents in unstable air. These clouds are cauliflower-like in appearance with appreciable vertical development and dome-shaped upper surface. Usually cumuli-form clouds are separate and distinct from each other. They also have flat bases and rarely cover the entire sky. Precipitation from cumuliform clouds is usually of a showery nature. They are extremely turbulent and the best height to penetrate them is at two-thirds of the cloud height. See cumulus and cumulonimbus.
